Mike Garrett 61, was named athletic director in January of 1993, after a successful Heisman-trophy winning career at USC, he enjoyed a career in business, law, government, athletic administration and community affairs. Garrett oversees the 19 men's and women's teams and the $44 million budget of one of the world's most successful athletic programs. During his tenure USC has won 15 national titles in men's tennis, women's swimming, baseball, men's water polo, women's water polo, women's track and field, women's volleyball, women's golf, and football. In addition he has won 31 conference crowns, and almost annually has finished in the Top 10 (among the 323 Division I universities) in the Sears Directors' Cup all-sports standings. He is one of the top fundraisers in the country, with over $25 million in 2004-05. He has also undertaken the biggest construction program in the history of USC. Mike Garrett has been at the forefront of womens' athletics, providing the maximum number of women's scholarships permitted by the NCAA. Official NCAA graduation rates for USC student-athletes have averaged near or above the national rate over the past 10 years. The 2001 graduation rate for the Trojan football team was at an all-time high 82%. Under his leadership, Trojan coaches have been named National Coaches of the Year 9 times and Conference Coaches of the Year 22 times. Prior to joining the USC staff, he was director of business development for the Great Western Forum (1988-90). Earlier in his career, he worked for the San Diego district attorney's office and is involved with various youth groups in Los Angeles.
